The International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated annually on 11 October. The day aims to promote girl’s empowerment and fulfilment of their human rights while also highlighting the challenges that girls all over the world face.

International Day of the Girl Child was launched in 2012 by the United Nations general assembly. Issues that are focused on during the day are education, equality, child marriage, access to services regarding puberty and sexual health and addressing issues around gender-based violence.
This year the theme is “My Voice, Our Equal Future” which focuses on:
• Live free from gender-based violence, harmful practices, and HIV and AIDS
• Learn new skills towards the futures they choose
• Lead as a generation of activists accelerating social change

About this event

Celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child with a small group of diverse young women from our EMBRACE program. This event will provide an honest and refreshing perspective on what it means to be a young woman in Australia. Join us for a conversation about their lives, loves, challenges and hopes for the future. This is a unique opportunity to gain a glimpse into the real worlds of girls and young women, while also hearing some practical advice for young women and their parents. We’ll be covering topics like identity, culture, sport, body image, equality and the importance of finding a sense of belonging.
